Hot buttered crumpets!

Updated: Jun 1, 2022

Who doesn't love a crumpet?! They are great for breakfast and can also be a treat at tea time. Sweet or savoury, they are delicious.

I personally love crumpets, which brought me to designing a new kitchen sign. It evokes such a cosy feel. We've toasted crumpets on the log burner here at home. We'd woken up one winter morning to a power cut, so we lit the fire and had a simple, yet exciting (we felt like we were camping) breakfast, of crumpets smothered in butter. You can't beat it.

Your average crumpet has less than 100 calories, so depending on your topping, they can be a low calorie breakfast or snack option.

I wanted to share with you a few of my favourite toppings for crumpets as my daughter recently, was so excited by the fact that I offered syrup to top her toasted crumpet. This has to be my favourite as the syrup runs through all of the little holes in the crumpet. Delicious!

You can't go wrong with a poached egg on a crumpet. It's healthy, especially if you add a side of steamed spinach and when you cut into it the silky yellow yolk drips into the crumpet.

For a more substantial option, add a slice of ham under your poached egg.

Marmite and butter is also delicious (only if you're a Marmite lover of course). You only need a thin layer of Marmite. I know someone who tried Marmite for the first time and they put it onto toast as you would pâté. Really thick! Surprisingly they didn't like it. You only need a little bit.

For a full-on breakfast (maybe after a good night out) or as a brunch option, is the cooked breakfast stack. Toasted crumpets (buttered, of course), a poached or fried egg, crispy bacon and maybe some mushrooms. Stack them high on your plate and tuck in. Of course, if you wanted to be really naughty, you could pour a little syrup over the top.

Cheese! Create cheese on toast with crumpets. The cheese melts into the crumpet. You could also create Welsh rarebit for a filling lunch.

Of course you can just have your usual toast toppings, such as jam, honey, chocolate spread or peanut butter.

Baked beans and scrambled egg on a buttered crumpet is a simple yet yummy option for a quick tea time idea.

The list is endless. We'll end on a high though, with French toast (crumpet). Soak your crumpets in the creamy, egg mixture as you would your bread and fry both sides. Serve with some berries and a sprinkling of icing sugar. Enjoy!
