Classic Crumble (GF)

Today we harvested our apples from the garden. And by harvest I mean my daughter and I whacked the apples from the tree with a broom! We'd normally leave the apples until they naturally dropped to the ground, but if we let that happen this year we'd run the risk of either knocking one of us out cold or squishing the wild bunnies and muntjac deers that share our garden. The apples this year are huge! The photo on the left shows a 'normal' sized apple compared to our cooking apples from our tree.

As we now have lots of apples I decided to make an apple crumble for tea. It has to be gluten free (GF) as my daughter is coeliac. It's one of the easier GF recipes which was a blessing today as my to-do list was larger than the apples! Below is the recipe with a couple of small amendments from me...

Gluten free apple crumble


3 cooking apples (or 2 if they're as big as ours)

75g brown sugar

150g caster sugar

2 tsp ground cinnamon

250g GF plain white flour*

125g Unsalted butter*


Pre-heat oven to 160°C (fan)

Peel and slice apples and layer in a deep ovenproof dish.

Mix brown sugar and cinnamon together and mix in with the apple slices so they're

evenly covered.

In a large bowl mix the flour, caster sugar and butter with your fingers until the mixture turns into breadcrumbs. Squeeze the mixture as if making pastry.

Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the apples.

Place in the oven and bake for 50-60 minutes until golden brown.

*Jen's amendments

I replace 100g of the plain flour with ground almonds to give it a lovely nutty flavour and a more crumbly texture.

I don't usually use all of the butter. I use approximately 80gms and find that this is plenty. So perhaps add a bit at a time and see how you go. Plus if you don't use all of the butter stated, it means you can enjoy your crumble with gallons of custard without feeling too guilty!
